It has become Warner Bros. Games' biggest launch ever
Warner Bros. reportedly sees Hogwarts Legacy as a long-term franchise following the Harry Potter game proving very popular upon release.
Taking place over a hundred years before The Boy Who Lived and his time at the magical school, the action role-playing game sees players control their own unique character after they select their appearance and house.
The game's plot follows the lead character as they arrive in fifth year later than the rest of the students while holding an "ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart". In order to understand the secret fully, the character must access a forgotten form of magic.
Released on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S on 10 February, the first reviews from critics for Hogwarts Legacy were absolutely stellar.
Meanwhile, according to statistics provided to Variety on Tuesday by Warner Bros. Games, the game had seen 267 million hours played, as well as 393 million magical plants grown, 242 million potions brewed and 1.25 billion Dark Wizards defeated.
On top of this, WB Games revealed on Thursday that Hogwarts Legacy has sold more than 12 million units, hitting global sales of $850 million in the two weeks since it was released.
This makes it the video game publisher's biggest launch ever.
Variety reports that Warner Bros. now sees Hogwarts Legacy as a long-term franchise, with WB Games president David Haddad telling the outlet: “The player engagement is spectacular.
“We are very pleased with the initial launch and see a bright future for our other platform launches.
"Our goal is to continue to utilize our amazing library of Warner Bros. Discovery franchises as we develop our future slate of games."
Hogwarts Legacy will be available on PS4 and Xbox One in April, followed by Switch in July.
