Liverpool’s pursuit of Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk was one of the key stories of the summer transfer window - but it didn’t reach a definitive end. The Anfield club ended up having to make an apology for their approach for the Dutchman, and in the end he remained at St Mary’s.
Now however The Mirror is reporting that Liverpool has given Jurgen Klopp the green light to resume his interest in Van Dijk during the January window.
Not only that, Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has also admitted that the £70 million defender could go to Liverpool.
“I don’t know. I can’t control the market,” Pellegrino said on Thursday. “You never know, because when we talk about money everybody has got a price.”
“The budget is to sign players and the biggest teams have got money to try to sign players.I can’t decide about that. This is a question for our owners.”
“Everybody is focused on their area, to try to bring the best players possible for their club. It is something that happens every single transfer window. We have got a lot of good players and most of the teams want to sign them.”
