Robbie Keane has officially announced his retirement from football

Keane started his 23-year career with Wolverhampton Wanderers, his eye for goal earning him a move to then-Premier League club Coventry City. From there he moved to Inter Milan in 2000, before returning to the Premier League with Leeds United a year later. Keane also had two spells for Tottenham either side of a brief stint with Liverpool in 2008/2009. The former Republic of Ireland international also played for West Ham, Aston Villa, Celtic and Los Angeles Galaxy before bringing his career to a close with Indian Super League side, ATK. In international football, Keane also established himself as his country's highest all-time scorer - scoring three goals at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. He will now join up with Mick McCarthy - who managed the Irish team at the tournament in the Far East - as part of his backroom staff as he starts his second spell as national team manager. In a statement, Keane said: "Today, after 23 wonderful years, I am formally announcing my retirement as a professional footballer. "From Crumlin United around the world to the likes of Milan, London and Los Angeles, I could never have imagined the path my football life would take. "It has exceeded all the hopes I had as a football-mad boy growing up in Dublin."
