The World Cup-winner has passed away aged 78

Tributes have been made from the football world and beyond following the death of Nobby Stiles, aged 78. Born in Collyhurst, Manchester, in 1942, Stiles was a member of Manchester United's first European Cup triumph at Wembley in 1968. He is fondly remembered for playing his part in England's only World Cup win at the same venue two years earlier. His death comes after a long battle with prostate cancer and advanced dementia.

"The Stiles family are sad to announce that Nobby Stiles passed away peacefully today surrounded by his family after a long illness," a statement read.

"The family kindly ask for privacy at this sad time."

Gary Neville, who was coached by Stiles during his own time in United's academy, led the tributes to him on Twitter:
