Newcastle United finally confirm appointment of Eddie Howe

Newcastle United have appointed former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe as their new manager, replacing the recently departed Steve Bruce. The 43-year-old has not been in management since he left the Cherries in August 2020 after the club were relegated from the Premier League.  https://twitter.com/NUFC/status/1457724769592356868 The Magpies had originally approached Villarreal manager Unai Emery for the vacant position, but the former Arsenal manager turned them down in favour of remaining in Spain. Newcastle's recruitment process has been somewhat of a farce, having cancelled their final round of interviews with managerial candidates having felt so confident that they had secured Emery, The Mirror reported. Before the 50-year-old had even been mentioned, it was believed that the Magpies had held talks with former Roma manager Paulo Fonseca about the vacancy. Howe was the obvious alternative to the Spaniard, and he is believed to have impressed Newcastle in his interview. Following the £305m Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle last month, Bruce left the club just 13 days after the new reign had began.  Since his departure, Graeme Jones has been in interim charge and the Tyneside club have drawn with Crystal Palace and been beaten by Chelsea under him. He has taken charge of 190 Premier League matches, winning 56, drawing 43 and losing 91. In his managerial career, he has faced the Magpies on eight occasions, winning two, drawing two and losing four of those encounters. The Englishman has previously worked with Newcastle players Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Matt Ritchie from his time at Bournemouth.  The club are also reported to be in advanced talks with former Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo over taking over as their director of football.
