With a report claiming last week that Mkhitaryan had blamed Jose Mourinho's defensive demands for his poor form, Miguel Delaney now writes in The Independent that United would allow him to leave if they received an acceptable offer. Dortmund, Delaney writes, have shown the strongest interest so far, making them his most likely destination at this point.
Mkhitaryan arrived in Manchester from Dortmund in the summer of 2016, fresh from being named the Bundesliga's player of the season. Despite high expectations, he struggled to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League, only really establishing himself in United's first team towards the end of the year.
Interestingly, the report also points out that a Mkhitaryan return to Dortmund might open up the possibility of a United move for Julian Weigl. Mourinho is said to be an admirer of the defensive midfielder, and although a swap deal is unlikely, an agreement for Mkhitaryan might pave the way for 22-year-old to move to Manchester at some point in the future.Explore more on these topics:
