Speaking during the press conference which followed United's hard-fought 1-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon, Mourinho explained that he - and other key figures at the club - wanted Carrick to join the coaching setup in the near future, regardless of how much football he played for the remainder of the season.
"There is a seat [on the coaching staff] waiting for Carrick," the United boss said.
"I want that, the board wants that and the owners want that. It is waiting for him, so he in a comfortable situation [regarding his future]."
Carrick joined United from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006. He was awarded a one-year contract extension in the summer after making 38 appearances for United during Mourinho's first season at Old Trafford.Explore more on these topics:
