Jose Mourinho confirms Michael Carrick will be offered a coaching role at Manchester United

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Michael Carrick will be offered the chance to join Manchester United's coaching staff.

The 36-year-old midfielder confirmed on Friday night that the he had been unavailable for selection in recent weeks after he was found to have an 'irregular heart rhthym' following his appearance against Burton in the Carabao Cup in September. After undergoing a cardiac ablation procedure, Carrick added that he had returned to training. Speaking during the press conference which followed United's hard-fought 1-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon, Mourinho explained that he - and other key figures at the club - wanted Carrick to join the coaching setup in the near future, regardless of how much football he played for the remainder of the season. "There is a seat [on the coaching staff] waiting for Carrick," the United boss said. "I want that, the board wants that and the owners want that. It is waiting for him, so he in a comfortable situation [regarding his future]." Carrick joined United from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006. He was awarded a one-year contract extension in the summer after making 38 appearances for United during Mourinho's first season at Old Trafford.
