Italy replacing Iran at World Cup moves step forward with Trump urged to act

Where there's a will, there's a way...

A Trump envoy has asked FIFA to replace Iran with Italy at the upcoming World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico.

If Italy, four-times World Cup winners, weren't already embarrassed enough in failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, gaining entry through the back door will surely do it.

Italy's situation all depends on the situation in Iran.

As a result of the on-going military conflict between the Middle Eastern nation and co-hosts USA, there have been serious questions over Iran's participation, especially considering all of the country's games — against Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand — are still scheduled to take place on American soil.

While there has been plenty of back-and-forth between FIFA organisers and Donald Trump on one side, and Iranian politicians on the other, it is fair to say that there is still no clear answer as to whether Iran will appear at the tournament.

This may play into Italy's favour, as per reports from the Financial Times.

US special envoy Paolo Zampolli told the outlet: “I confirm I have suggested to Trump and [Fifa president Gianni] Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup.

"I’m an Italian native and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a US-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion."

So far, there has been no response on this request.

Italy have endured a tumultuous record in major international competitions in recent year, not playing in a World Cup since 2014, and not making it to the knockouts since they last won it in 2006.

They will be missing the latest edition after failing to top their qualifying group and subsequently being knocked out by Bosnia and Herzegovina in the playoff.

On the other hand, Iran qualified for sport's biggest event all the way back in March 2025.

It would come as little surprise that if the US were to ban Iran from competing in the World Cup, that Italy would be their natural choice of predelection.

With around 16 million Americans claiming Italian ancestry, this would certainly create more interest in the States, as well as probably sell a few more tickets - which let's be honest, is probably the most attractive aspect for the organisers.
