Antonio Conte has been sacked as Chelsea manager
The Italian, who won the Premier League in his first season at Stamford Bridge, failed to guide Chelsea to Champions League qualification last season, something which is likely to have been a major factor in his dismissal. Former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri is expected to replace Conte after the Italian club's president confirmed that a deal was close to being agreed for the 59-year-old to take over at the London club.
According to a report from Matt Law in The Telegraph, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich held off sacking Conte in the hope that he would agree terms with another club. Having not done so, he's risked paying Conte £9million in compensation, covering the cost of the final year of his contract.
Conte, whose last game in charge of Chelsea saw them beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final, is said to be prepared to wait a year before returning to management.Most Viewed in sport
