The attack occurred on Sunday.

Alamara Djabi, a 19-year-old FC Midtjylland midfielder, has undergone life-saving surgery, after being stabbed during the early hours of Sunday morning, as reported in The Mirror and quoted by the Danish football club.

According to reports, Djabi was the victim of an attack in the Danish city of Herning, and was placed into an induced coma upon his arrival at hospital, required two rounds of surgery, and has now woken up and is in a stable condition.

The player's club have issued a statement confirming: "Alamara Djabi was seriously injured in a stabbing and is now in stable condition after two operations.

"He has woken up from an induced coma and is doing well under the circumstances. FC Midtjylland is in close dialogue and collaboration with the authorities and supports him and his family.

"Out of respect for the police's ongoing investigation, including witness interviews and investigations, we have no further comments. We ask for the public's understanding and call for respect for the privacy of Alamara Djabi and his loved ones in this difficult situation.

"Alamara Djabi has not been selected for the first team for a long time and was not in the game for the upcoming matches. Our thoughts are with our teammate, his family and friends, and we wish him continued recovery."

Police in the northern European nation also confirmed they have begun investigations into the incident, and are carrying out work to identify a suspect.

Further updates on the player's condition are expected in due time.

Djabi has appeared just once for Midtjylland so far this season, in a Europa League qualifying match against Finnish outfit KuPS, in which he came on as a substitute.

Following Midtjylland's qualification for the main tournament, Djabi was named on the bench for games against Celtic, Roma, Genk and Dinamo Zagreb.

Midtjylland are best known to English football fans for their shock victory over Manchester United in the 2016 Europa League.

Following a 2-1 first leg defeat to the Danes, Louis van Gaal experimented with his lineup for the return game, putting an inexperienced Marcus Rashford into his team.

The English forward went on to score a brace as the Red Devils came out 5-1 winners.
