We knew football kits were getting more expensive, but £699 for this season's shirt seems a bit excessive even by today's standards.

That's how much it will cost Cardiff City fans if they want to get their hands on the black and yellow third kit, but before you start making assumptions about Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan there's a reason for the price tag. The kit, which is unlikely to get much of an airing during the Welsh club's Championship campaign, is not on general sale. Instead, the only people who can obtain a copy are the players themselves and those companies or individuals who sponsor a player for the season. The cost of such a sponsorship? That's right, £699. A club statement reads: "The only way you can own one of these extremely rare shirts is by sponsoring a first-team player for the 2015/16 campaign. By doing so, you'll be presented with the shirt at the conclusion of the season by the respective player." If you've got a spare few hundred quid lying around then maybe it could be worth it. Then again, how many people have got rich by blowing the best part of a grand on a football shirt?
