Mike Ashley's time as Newcastle United owner appears to be nearing an end.

After a decade in control of the north east club, a statement on Monday afternoon revealed that Ashley had put the club up for sale. This, of course, isn't the first time Ashley has tried to sell up. He did so on two separate occasions in 2008 and 2009, later changing his mind on each occasion. The first time he attempted to sell the club followed protests by supporters against his ownership. Such protests have occurred regularly since he took over in 2007, and it's fair to say he's not exactly been a universally popular figure with the club's fanbase. Judging by the reaction of a certain club legend, it seems it's not just the supporters that are glad to learn of Monday's development... The club legend in question is Alan Shearer, scorer of a record 206 Newcastle goals. He also stepped in as manager in 2009, but failed to steer them away from relegation to the Championship. Although the tweet Shearer sent doesn't use any words to show his feelings about the news, his choice of GIF - showing a celebratory scene from Seinfeld - certainly makes it known that he's quite pleased about it. https://twitter.com/alanshearer/status/919963836450455553
