Team GB are off and running with their first medals of the Rio Olympics.

Overnight Britain's Jazz Carlin took the silver medal in the women's 400m freestyle, coming second to the USA's Katie Ledecky. And just before Carlin took to the water Adam Peaty, 21, took Britain's first gold of the games when he romped home in first place in the 100m breaststroke - smashing his own world record, which he had set just 24 hours earlier. He finished with a time of 57.13sec, more than a second and a half quicker than his nearest rival, South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh “This is what you dream of," he is quoted as saying by the Mirror. "Every time you want to go back to bed at 4am when the alarm goes off and it's still dark outside, this makes it all worthwhile." While Adam was of course thrilled, back home in Staffordshire his family was over the moon - none more so than his nan Mavis, who has become an overnight hit on Twitter - racking up an extra 3,000 followers over the weekend. She tweeted this before the final - showing he isn't afraid of an emoji or two: https://twitter.com/Mavise42Mavis/status/762385410995748864 https://twitter.com/Mavise42Mavis/status/762455988771303424 And she was the proudest grandmother in Britain after he took the gold: https://twitter.com/Mavise42Mavis/status/762468785626292224 https://twitter.com/Mavise42Mavis/status/762471371360174080 And it seems Adam's fans have taken Mavis to their hearts as well. https://twitter.com/joannevickers/status/762523283480776704 https://twitter.com/KirstyFitzy/status/762551233731235840 https://twitter.com/gman40/status/762470837077221376 https://twitter.com/TheToriParadox/status/762470060208164865 And just to prove she Mavis really does have a sense of humour, this is her new Twitter bio: Screen Shot 2016-08-08 at 09.05.17 Mavis, we salute you. comment thumbnail_SNAPCHATUK
