Will football ever solve its racism problem?

It was a week marked by regretful scenes in football, both at home and abroad

On the latest episode of Liquid Football host Kelly Cates is joined by former Chelsea and Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips and ex-Chelsea and West Ham striker Carlton Cole. After a weekend marked by a number of incidents of alleged racism, the conversation begins on the abuse received by Mali and FC Porto striker Moussa Marega. Facing his former side Vitoria and having just scored what would end up being the winning goal, Marega was on the receiving end of horrific abuse from the home support, who hurled chairs and abuse at the 28-year-old. Deciding he could no longer continue in the match, Marega decided to exit the pitch, before being restrained by both teammates and opponents. Wright-Phillips and Cole discussed their own experiences of racial abuse on a football pitch, with Wright-Phillips' taking place in an international match between England and Spain. Cole, too, recalls being stereotyped as 'lazy' by pundits and other people in football, something which made him question his own attributes. The panel also discuss whether referees should engage in banter with footballers on the pitch, following Bournemouth midfielder Dan Gosling's complaint against referee Jon Moss. They also look ahead to the week's Champions League fixtures, and discuss what it feels like to play on the biggest stage in club football.
