Woman with ‘abolish monarchy’ sign charged with offence after arrests of republican protesters

She had been arrested on Sunday morning for 'a breach of the peace'

A woman who held up a sign reading 'F**k imperialism, abolish monarchy' at the proclamation ceremony for King Charles III in Edinburgh has been charged. The 22-year-old woman was arrested outside St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh on Sunday “in connection with a breach of the peace”. A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "A 22-year-old woman was arrested outside St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh on Sunday, September 11, 2022 in connection with a breach of the peace. “She was charged and was released on an undertaking to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a later date." The sign is not understood to be the reason for her arrest.
