Footage emerges of woman tearing down “Gareth Southgate” tube sign

Footage has emerged online that appears to show a woman tearing down the Southgate tube station sign after it was renamed in honour of England manager Gareth Southgate. The name change was announced by Transport For London at the start of the week, with the sign put up as a tribute to the England manager and his achievement in helping the England national team reach the World Cup semi-final. It had been due to be taken down on Tuesday night. The time that the video was filmed is not yet known, nor is the identity of the woman featured in it. However, it has received strong condemnation online. The tribute to England manager comes after his team were defeated in the semi-final by eventual runners-up Croatia. The tournament was their best World Cup run since 1990, and their first semi-final in a major tournament since 1996. A TfL spokesperson told JOE.co.uk: "This was not a TfL member of staff and TfL did not grant permission for this to happen. The signs were due to be taken down overnight last night as the activity was only due to take place on Monday and Tuesday. "Thousands of people visited the station in the last 48 hours to take selfies and celebrate the achievements of the England men's football team this summer."
