French police say they have shot a man outside the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris after he attacked an officer with a hammer.

Police have responded to an alert at the famous cathedral, clearing the streets around the area. French officials have urged people to stay away. Authorities have confirmed that a security operation is underway.
