Nicolas Cage's new movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent has scored a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 100 per cent after its premiere at SXSW in Austin, Texas.
The world is ready for Nicolas Cage to return to the spotlight - and his latest movie might just be his way in following a string of larger-than-life B-movie roles. After a recent screening of his new movie, slated for release on April 22, 15 reviews appeared on Rotten Tomatoes that seemingly spelled bright things ahead for Cage's comeback.
This very meta movie sees Cage playing a version of himself who is struggling financially, only to be invited by a wealthy fan to appear at his birthday party. However the CIA also have their eyes on Cage, as this particular super fan is actually a drug kingpin played by The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal.
Sharon Horgan, Tiffany Haddish and Neil Patrick Harris also star.
Variety's Owen Gleiberman described the blockbuster as possessing an "exuberant resonance."
Gleiberman added: "The film is speckled with clips from Nicolas Cage movies, quotes and gestures form Nicolas Cage movies, and a visit to Javi's museum of Nicolas Cage memorabilia."
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent's unique ability to pull at the nostalgic heartstrings of its audience is one dominating factor in this early success. Drew Tinnin from Dead Central notes that "this could easily be called Nicolas Cage's best performance because, really, it's every performance bottled into one."
Jude Dry from Indiewire went as far as to say, "it's one of the funniest movies of the year."
Most reviews have one thing in common: everyone is in love with Pascal.
Dry explained: "Another key reason the movie works is the chemistry between Cage and Pascal; a crackling harmony between two dramatic actors who can also do comedy riffing wildly."
