Labour leader Jeremy Cobyn has responded to Theresa May's announcement that she intends to call a snap General Election.

May made the surprise statement outside Downing Street this morning, confirming that she intends to seek a General Election for June 8 2017. Leader of the Opposition Jeremy Corbyn posted a response on Facebook, in which he welcomed "the Prime Minister's decision to give the British people the chance to vote for a government that will put the interests of the majority first." Under the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act, the PM can call a General Election if two-thirds of lawmakers vote for it. Corbyn's welcoming of May's seeking of a General Election suggests that it will go ahead unfettered.
