Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said there was an ongoing incident at a commercial building on Curzon Street.
The street is located beside student accommodation, just a short distance from the city’s Victoria shopping centre.
A spokesperson for the service said a call had been received at 11.23am, and 10 pumps were attending the incident.
In a statement posted on social media, the police said the fire happened in a derelict building.
It said: "Police and fire crews are currently at the scene, and a number of cordons will be place around Huntingdon Street and Curzon Street.
"The cause of the fire is not yet known. There are no reports of any injuries.
"As a precaution, we are looking at evacuating a number of properties on the street."
