Massive outage brings internet down for hundreds of major sites

Well, hello again

A major internet outage caused hundreds of websites to go down on Tuesday morning, following a server problem with a major content delivery company. Sites ran by American content delivery network and DDoS mitigation company Cloudshare were hit with a ‘500 Internal Server error’ message for nearly an hour on June 21, leaving many scrambling to figure out a solution. Hundreds of well-known brands use the service to run their websites and the provider is the most popular content delivery system on the web by some margin. Their clients include the likes of Discord, Bet36, JustEat, Peloton and even Google - oh, and of course, yours truly.

Jake Moore, Global Cybersecurity Advisor at ESET Internet Security explained: "There seems to be a problem with Cloudflare and a fix is being implemented but in the meantime users may be frustrated with the amount of services offline.

"It just goes to show how the majority of the internet still funnels through a small series of lines which puts major pressure on these platforms which are designed to offer protection and reliability, he said, adding that "these [instances] are becoming more commonplace."
