It took hours for rescuers to reach the vehicle's crushed shell which was partially submerged in water.

A British couple have died after the Ferrari they were driving skidded off a mountainside and plunged into a river.

The married couple were part of a 20-car convoy during a rally for British Ferrari owners in Spain.

Their vehicle was found in the Yuso River in the town of Boca de Huergano in northern Spain.

It took rescuers hours to reach the shell of the black Ferrari 488's crushed shell, which had become partially submerged in the river.

The vehicle had tumbled upside down on its roof before being flipped back over during the rescue attempt.

The couple - 78 and 58 -  had been on the N-621 road when the accident occurred.

Drivers are warned about the N-621's "sweeping bends" and "twisty roads", despite the highway's stunning scenery.

A local commentator, Jose Antonio Gutierrez Sampedro, said: "A Ferrari 488 with 700 horsepower needs to be handled carefully.

"It seems the couple were 78 and 58 years old. Maybe the driver suffered a medical emergency. Such a sad way to lose your life."

It remains unclear whether the couple drowned or died from their initial injuries.
