It was to highlight a very important issue.
We use far too much plastic as a society – anyone who watch Blue Planet last year knows that.
Monday night’s The One Show drew attention to this issue, with a special focusing on how we can cut down on single-use plastics, featuring guests as varied as Chris Packham and Michael Gove.
To highlight the situation, they relocated the sofa outside, where there were surrounded by 8.7 tonnes of plastic that had been collected by volunteers from beaches across the country.

It certainly looked different to the normal studio – but viewers who tuned in late thought they’d actually tuned into Mad Max or something.

Alex Jones did confirm that all the plastic would be recycled after the show finished.
