All six episodes of the new series are available to watch at home right now
The folk working on The Rig are all fantastic in their own right, so having them working all together is very exciting.
The series is produced and some of the episodes are directed by John Strickland (Line of Duty), working with a killer cast including Iain Glen (Game of Thrones), Emily Hampshire (Schitt's Creek), Martin Compston (Line of Duty), Mark Bonnar (Quiz), Owen Teale (Game of Thrones) and Mark Addy (The Full Monty).
It tells the story of a group of workers on an oil rig 150 miles off the Scottish coast. Tempers are already frayed, thanks to the close quarters living conditions and delayed trips back home, only for things to get so much worse once a mysterious fog rolls in from across the ocean.
Once they're enveloped by the cloud, they lose all contact with the outside world, visibility for passing ships is zero, and some of the folk on the rig start to behave very weird...
So what you've got is a mix of Lost and The Thing, set in one of the most dangerous places on the planet.
While not every single critic agreed with our enthusiasm, the series did still score 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, with some of the more positive reviews as follows:
The Telegraph - "The direction is terrific, the editing superb and the performances top notch. High-purity binge nirvana."
Roger Ebert - "The show is effective in a nuts-and-bolts thriller way, with a cast of game Scotsmen (and a few others) grimly solving problems ranging from mutinies to prophecies to apocalyptic mechanical disasters."
National World - "The Rig is an evocative, atmospheric supernatural thriller - it marks a strong start to 2023 for Amazon Prime, and sets a high benchmark for its upcoming shows to meet across the rest of the year."
The Rig is available to watch on Prime Video right now.
