Liam Neeson’s late-period evolution from serious acclaimed actor to grizzled badass revenge-taking dad has been something to behold. It all started with Taken – a wonderfully stupid, basic and delightful action movie about a dad trying to rescue his U2-loving daughter from human traffickers. Taken not only spawned millions of memes, but also its own sub-genre: the Liam Neeson revenge-dad picture. Non-Stop. A Walk Amongst The Tombstones. Run All Night. The Commuter. Unknown. Sure, he still makes actually good films like Silence or A Monster Calls. But there is something so joyous about his dedication to making bog-standard, nuts-and-bolts thrillers where he just kills a load of bad dudes, usually to rescue some assorted family members. And now, the latest one has been announced, and it sounds like something special. Hard Powder stars Neeson as father who’s son is killed by a drug lord, and he goes out to get revenge. Pretty standard, right? Only, in this one, he plays a snowplow driver. The town has just awarded him “Citizen of the Year.” But Nels has to leave his quiet mountain life when his son is murdered by a powerful drug lord. As a man who has nothing to lose he is stoked by a drive for vengeance. This unlikely hero uses his hunting skills and transforms from an ordinary man into a skilled killer as he sets out to dismantle the cartel.
