Warning: this movie absolutely will not be for everyone
The plot synopsis for Infinity Pool sounds like the set-up for a decent if unoriginal horror: "James and Em Foster are enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation in the fictional island of La Tolqa, when a fatal accident exposes the resort's perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors."
Spoiled rich people go on holiday and discover a bottomless pit of terror and fear, they let all their money go to their heads but that money won't save them now, blah blah blah. Except then the movie debuted at Sundance, and the reactions were properly extraordinary:
The Playlist - "Infinity Pool is the kind of film that reminds you that sometimes, the best thing a filmmaker can do is take you to places you would never dream of heading without apologising for any of it."
Slash Film - "Cronenberg creates an atmosphere of nauseating dread through it all as things grow increasingly deranged. No fooling: this is not an easy movie to watch. It gets under your skin and makes your flesh crawl. It infects you. You'll probably want to take a shower after the credits roll, and then take another shower just to be sure you're extra clean."
Consequence - "There’s just more under the hood than your typical imitators: the antic disposition of the idle rich, the way infinite money can absolve the rich of any accountability, and the ever-predatory nature of colonial tourism. Wrap it up in a package this wild, shocking, and perverse, and it makes for a delightful bloody mess that you’ll want to go back to."
We previously covered a full breakdown on the attention-grabbing trailer when it released a month ago, but off the back of the early reviews (84% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing) and the newly announced release date, we're more excited than ever.
Written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg (son of the legendary David Cronenberg), Infinity Pool features Alexander Skarsgård and Mia Goth in leading roles. So if you're in the market for something very, very, VERY different, thankfully you won't have too long to wait.
Infinity Pool is released in cinemas in the UK and Ireland on Friday, 24 March.
