He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor but sadly, didn't win
Fans think that 1993's What's Eating Gilbert Grape should have earned Leonardo DiCaprio an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, dubbing the film "Leo's best role."
DiCaprio had been famously snubbed from Oscar wins until 2016's The Revenant finally earned him an award for Best Actor. That isn't to say his acting portfolio is void of noteworthy performances. In fact, it's quite the opposite.
Lasse Hallström's 1993 classic, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, saw a 19-year-old DiCaprio step into the role of Arnie Grape opposite Johnny Depp as the titular character. The film follows Depp's Gilbert as he navigates life, caught between his first love and family obligations.
The film grossed just $10m but has since solidified its status as a cult classic.
Almost 30 years later, the film is still widely discussed, and many still believe the Los Angeles-born actor was snubbed.
"Leo should have won an oscar for Whats eating Gilbert Grape," wrote one person on Twitter, while another added, "Leo's best role was Whats Eating Gilbert Grape tbh he deserved that oscar so long ago."
"Honestly how did leo dicaprio NOT win an oscar for Whats Eating Gilbert Grape," wrote another.
DiCaprio was nominated for the academy award in 1994 but was beaten by Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive. His other nominations include Best Actor for The Aviator, Blood Diamond, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. DiCaprio was also nominated for Best Actor for The Wolf of Wall Street.
While an award for a 30-year-old film is out of the question, hopefully the famed loathrio can grab himself another Academy Award sometime soon.
